About Sharna Burgess!
Sharna Burgess was born on June 21st 1985. She grew up in Wagga Wagga, Australia where despite being a tree climbing tomboy, her love for entertainment and dance was evident from a very young age. As a young girl, Sharna was involved with lots of sports and other activities including dance, but she could always be found singing into a hairbrush, and making relatives sit to watch her latest choreography. When she was 5 years old, Sharna began training in ballet, jazz and gymnastics. By the age of 8, she had started ballroom, where she went on to win many local and national titles in her first few years. At the age of 15, Sharna performed in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games closing ceremony. It was a honour and a memory she will never forget. As well, Sharna was chosen to represent Australia at the World Championships in both the Standard and Latin styles. After her semi-final performance, she felt something wrong in her knee. At that point she had a small tear in one of her ligaments of her knee. She found out that she was in the finals and did perform. That performance ended up ripping two ligaments in half and losing all the meniscus in one side of her knee. Sharna needed knee reconstruction surgery on two ligaments. She spent 6 months in a brace and it took about 12 months to get her knee back to it's original flexibility.
At the age of 18, Sharna moved to London, England to further her dancing career. After living in London for 2 years, collecting numerous titles around the globe and appearing in a UK tour with the theatre show Simply Ballroom, she was picked up in 2006 by choreographer Jason Gilkison to go on tour with a hit dance show called Burn The Floor. Burn The Floor has sold over 4 million tickets in over 30 countries and 160 cities worldwide. Sharna toured with this company for 6 years. While she was with Burn The Floor, the company did guest appearances on Dancing with the Stars Australia, Dancing With The Stars USA, So You Think You Can Dance Holland, and Sharna had the opportunity to be the assistant choreographer to Jason Gilkison for So You Think You Can Dance USA and Australia for many years. In 2009, Burn The Floor landed on Broadway for 6 months, where Sharna was one of the lead female dancers.
After achieving her life long dream of Broadway, Sharna said goodbye in 2011 to an amazing run with Burn The Floor and moved from the theatre world to the film industry, where she choreographed for Street Dance 2 3D, set to be released in Europe March 2012. Here she not only choreographed some of the most exciting latin and salsa scenes on film to date, but also worked with renowned choreographers Rich + Tone Talauega to fuse the Hip Hop world and the Latin world together, creating a whole new style.
Sharna is now currently living in Los Angeles, California and working on the #1 ABC show Dancing with the Stars, as a dancer and choreographer. She is also working towards a career in TV and Film through acting and hosting, as she loves life in front of the camera, just as much as making magic behind it. To her, being a part our entertainment industry is all her childhood dreams come true, and she hopes to continue her success long into the future.
Sharna is also currently dating fellow Hip Hop dancer Paul Kirkland. (Cutest couple EVER!) As well, she has a German Sheppard-Rottweiler dog named Andre!
